Ten years since graduation! Since 2012 I have done so many things and gone so many places I couldn't have even imagined back then. Today I want to look back on the final collection I made while at University, a collection of clothes that really changed my life and continues to be a huge impact on how I move forward with design from drawing to production.
The summer in the lead up to my final year I had been obessively taking photos around my neighbourhood, or anywhere where I saw old houses. London has many, so I had a hefty stack of photos of mainly victorian buildings. Once we started term I was rather stuck on what to do with all of the images. I had used city scapes as inspiration before, but something was not really working for me this time. My tutor kindly pointed out that in many of my photos I had not just focused on houses or buildings, but had taken care to get cats in my shots. I had sort of unintentionally photographed cats sitting in windows, laying in gardens, and stood majestically on grand fences. He suggested I lean into this disocvery and see where it takes me. I started to combine inspiration from the buildings and the cats, making architectural cat motif clotes yet again something was not quite right.
Finally I decided I needed to drop the houses, go for cats and their owners. I imagined the most wonderful yet whacky cat ladies and to my delight with a lot of research found them fascinating. I even found a lovely, yet kind of sad documentary about crazy cat ladies. Here is where it all started to come together for me.
While researching cat ladies I considered what they needed, wanted, how would they want to express themselves with fashion also knowing well that the last thing on their minds was fashion. They cared for their cats, saving them and somehow forgetting to take care of themselves. I wanted to make them a wardrobe that was fun and colourful, one that would show off their love of cats, but that would be practical too. I looked at wartime clothing for it has many practical elements built into the design, old workwear, and even kimono that people wore to work in fields with tasuki-gake, a tie which holds up the sleeves.
From this research I created clothes with lots of pockets, ties to hold things out of the way, and neck pillows for resting on the go. I wanted to make a collection that was conscious of the environment therefore the fabrics were all reclaimed. I used up my collection of vintage fabrics my grandmother gave me which were probably from the 60's, donations of old curtains from friends, bed sheets and deadstock fabrics from car boot sales, and more. In reclaiming materials I began to see myself similar to the crazy cat ladies, reclaiming cats from the streets and myself reclaiming fabrics from wherever I could find them. Thus The Cat Reclaimer was born.
I enjoyed making this collection so much, I have so many fond memories of being at university with friends, challenging myself to do something true to myself and not to impress others. I am also grateful I could produce items from this collection and sell them in Lamp Harajuku (H.P. France) in Tokyo, Japan the following year in 2013.
卒業から10年。2012年以降、私は当時想像もできなかったような様々なことをし、様々な場所に行ってきました。今日は、大学在学中に作った最後のコレクションを振り返ってみたいと思います。このコレクションは、私の人生を大きく変え、今でもドローイングから制作まで、デザインを進める上で大きな影響を与えている服です。卒業を控えた夏、私は近所や古い家を見かけると、夢中になって写真を撮っていました。ロンドンは古い家が多いので、ビクトリア朝様式の建物ばかりを撮影していました。学期が始まってからは、その写真をどうしたらいいのかわからなくなりました。以前にも、街の風景をインスピレーションとして使ったことがありましたが、今回は何かがうまくいきませんでした。チューターから、「家や建物だけでなく、猫が写り込んでいる写真が多い」と指摘されました。窓際に座ったり、庭に寝そべったり、大きなフェンスに堂々と立っていたり、ある意味無意識に猫を撮っていたのです。彼は、この無秩序さに身を任せ、それがどこに向かうかを見てみることを提案しました。私は、建物と猫からのインスピレーションを組み合わせて、建築的な猫のモチーフの服を作り始めたのですが、またしても何かがうまくいきませんでした。そして、いろいろと調べていくうちに、とても魅力的な猫たちがいることがわかりました。そして、素敵で、でもちょっと悲しい、おかしな猫女たちのドキュメンタリーを見つけたのです。ここで、私の中ですべてがまとまり始めたのです。猫女子をリサーチしながら、彼女たちが何を必要としているのか、何を望んでいるのか、どのようにファッションで自分を表現したいのか、そして彼女たちが一番考えていないことはファッションであることをよく理解した上で、考えてみました。彼女たちは猫を大切にし、助け、そしていつの間にか自分たちのことを忘れてしまっている。私は、彼らの猫への愛を表現できるような、楽しくてカラフルな、そして実用的なワードローブを作りたいと思いました。戦時中の服は実用的な要素が多く、昔の作業着や、田畑で働くときに着る着物に袖を通す襷掛けのようなものまで、デザインに取り入れました。そこから、ポケットがたくさんついている服、邪魔にならないように紐で留める服、外出先で休むためのネックピローなどを作りました。 また、環境に配慮したコレクションを作りたかったので、生地はすべて再生生地を使っています。祖母からもらった60年代のヴィンテージファブリックや、友人から寄付してもらった古いカーテン、カーブーツセールで買ったベッドシーツやデッドストックのファブリックなど、私のコレクションを使い切ったのです。素材を再生しているうちに、私は自分自身を、路上で猫を再生しているクレイジー・キャット・レディたちと同じだと思うようになり、自分自身もあらゆるところから布を再生しています。このコレクションを作るのはとても楽しかったし、大学時代に友人と一緒に、人の目を気にすることなく自分らしいことに挑戦したことが、とてもいい思い出になっています。そして、このコレクションのアイテムを制作し、翌年の2013年に東京のランプ原宿（H.P.FRANCE）で販売することができたことに感謝をしています。
